Calculate VAT in three steps

01

Choose add or remove

Add VAT when you have the price before tax. Remove VAT when the amount already includes tax.

02

Enter the amount and rate

The initial rate is 7%. Change it to the rate you need, greater than zero and no more than 100%.

03

Check the breakdown

Review the base, VAT and inclusive total shown to two decimals. Copy the breakdown or edit the values to calculate again.

Formulas and examples

Add VAT

VAT = base × rate ÷ 100. A base of 100 at 7% gives VAT of 7 and a total of 107.

Remove VAT

Base = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). An inclusive total of 107 at 7% contains a base of 100 and VAT of 7.

Common questions

Can I remove VAT by subtracting 7% from the total?

No. VAT is a percentage of the pre-tax base. For an inclusive total of 107 at 7%, divide by 1.07 to recover 100 rather than subtracting 7% of 107.

How are rounding differences displayed?
